Production

Following release of mankatha, venkat prabhu decided to do their next movie with surya and he written the script for surya. In december 2011, surya signed for the film and the film will be planned to release in 3D. The film is a bilingual and it release in tamil and telugu. But surya earlier he work with hari direction singam 2, he will not given a dates for venkat prabhu. So the director has planned to start the movie on april 2014.

Venkat Prabhu ready another script and he do with surya's brother karthi and the film titled as Biriyani and started on July 16 2012.

Casting

Karthi initially signed for the film, Premgi Amaren  do a best friend role for karthi. The female lead role initially reported as Samantha, Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra and Illeana D Cruz also considered for the role. But in early july 2012 bengali actress Richa Gangopadhay was selected for the role, who said that she played "a typical girl in it; someone who's mischievous and not-so innocent". So Venkat Prabhu finalized Hansika Motawani do the lead female role for her film.

The music director for the film is Yuvan Shankar Raja and he composed the songs for the film. Yuvan's composing it's a 100th film for him. On August 16 2013 the album was leaked in online so the audio launch was subsequently cancelled and the audio has direct release from stores on August 21 2013.

The music director for the movie is Harris Jayaraj, this is the third time collaboration with jeeva, earlier he compose Ko and Nanban. In this movie there are 6 tracks. Harris Jayaraj and the director headed to Turkey for composing sessions. Earlier may 2012 two songs has been recorded. Vaan Engum Nee Minna song has already been released on 18 october and the full album song released on october 24 2013, Kamal Haasan released the album.

Earlier Irrfan khan was revealed to be a part of the film but he have other movie projects so he dropped from the project. Later Vidyut Jamwal replace for irrfan khan. Jamwal decided to stunts himself and without any body double. Gulshan Grover was hired to play a negative role in this film and he is a powerful industrialist in the film.

The film began on 6 November 2012 in lucknow, while the first shoot ends in lucknow on 10 december and then next shoot began on kolkata at around last week of february 2013, mean while real and duplicate guns are used in the shooting saif used original gun because for realistic look. The actors shot in the Dalhousie area of central kolkata and other locations are Princep ghat, Kumartuli, Flower market and Laha Bari. Completed shooting in kolkata the crew came back in lucknow to resume and then to Nashik for the final shoot.
