Director vinoth met many producers before he met director Nalan kumarasamy and handled his script to him. While Nalan was on a trip, his mother found the script, read and loved it and asked Nalan to read it too, who too liked it and came forward to help him find a producer. Actor manobala wanted to start a new production house and had asked nalan to find some good stories, script was read by vinoth and instantly agreed to produce it.

The cinematographer velraj had worked with dhanush several projects including Aadukalam and 3. Dhanush approached Velraj to make his debut as a director and promised to play the lead role, if the cinematographer had narrated a good script. Dhanush subsequently agreed to produce the film and then revealed the title on independence day, noting that filming was to start on August 20, 2013.

In the film Amala Paul play the role of a doctor, Samuthirakani and Saranya Ponvannan doing a parent role for dhanush.  The film is reportedly a "message to the youth with some comedy on rising unemployment and the growing frustration for jobs with Love", while Dhanush playing the central character.

The production was started on august 2013, As on november 2013 dhanush revealed the status for the film and it would complete 60%. An initial poster was released on december 2013 and then final filming schedule in May 2014, with comedian Vivek amongst other actors joining the cast.
